All new businesses should visit their local IRS office or log on to www.irs.gov to obtain federal tax information. The site is updated regularly and offers the latest information on federal tax information and business issues.
All businesses with employees must establish Employment and Federal Unemployment accounts with the Federal Government. Any questions pertaining to an application for FEIN (Form SS-4) must be directed to the IRS.
Apply for FEIN Online to the IRS:
Visit the IRS Web site at www.irs.gov to obtain your FEIN on-line. Once you have completed all necessary fields on the online form, preliminary validation is performed and will alert you to information IRS needs that you may not have included. An EIN will be issued after the successful submission of the completed Form SS-4 online. Please note that not all business entity types may use this method.
Apply for FEIN by Mail or Telephone (Tele-TIN) to the IRS:
Use Federal Form SS-4 from the IRS web site at www.irs.gov to apply for an EIN either by mail or by telephone. You can get an EIN within minutes by calling the Tele-TIN phone number for your state (see below), or you can send the completed Form SS-4 to your local IRS service center to get your EIN by mail. You need a completed Form SS-4 to apply for an EIN by either method.
