Taxpayer Assistance - IRS/Federal Government Requirements

For more information on federal registration or federal tax requirements, or to verify the accuracy of any information on this page, it is recommended that any interested individual or entity inquire directly to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to ascertain current federal taxes, fees and information pertinent to their situation.

In addition to State of New Hampshire filing requirements, the Federal Government requires businesses with employees to file additional paperwork.  All federal forms are available at your local IRS office or by calling their toll free Form Ordering Line at 1 (800) TAX-FORMS or by visiting their website at www.irs.gov.

All new businesses should visit their local IRS office or log on to www.irs.gov to obtain federal tax information.  The IRS site is updated regularly and offers the latest information on federal tax information and business issues.

All businesses with employees must establish Employment and Federal Unemployment accounts with the Federal Government.  Any questions pertaining to an application for Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) (Form SS-4) must be directed to the IRS.

Apply for FEIN On-line to the IRS:

Visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov to obtain your FEIN on-line.  Once you have completed all necessary fields on the on-line form, preliminary validation is performed and will alert you to information IRS needs that you may not have included.  An FEIN will be issued after the successful submission of the completed Form SS-4 on-line.  Please note that not all business entity types may use this method.

Apply for FEIN by Mail or Telephone (Tele-TIN) to the IRS:

Use Federal Form SS-4 from the IRS website at www.irs.gov to apply for an FEIN either by mail or by telephone.  You can get an FEIN within minutes by calling the Tele-TIN phone number for your state (see below), or you can send the completed Form SS-4 to your local IRS service center to get your FEIN by mail.  You need a completed Form SS-4 to apply for an FEIN by either method.
